In the 30's surround sound was first being introduced in movie theaters. However, It wasn't until the 70's that the audio information of four channels could be encoded into two channels. Then in 1982, the Dolby Surround first started showing up in home theaters. In the mid 90's DVD's were beginning to be produced, this allowed for surround sound use in-home.
